Lady Bulldogs prepare for battle with Sheridan for top WVL spot
By Herb Swett Correspondent, The Sun
Coach Carrie Zimbrick is optimistic about this year’s Willamina volleyball team.
Last year, the Lady Bulldogs finished 10-4 in the West Valley League and made the first round of the state playoffs. This year, Caralyn Chewning, Alex Mendenhall, Karley Wilson and Sherae Cumberland are lost to graduation, but Zimbrick said, “We definitely have the roster to fill those needs.”
Seniors for 2010 are Sammie and Gecy Bowman, middle hitter Sarah Grant and outside hitter Erika Ivey. Not all the starting positions have been decided at this writing, but there is plenty of competition for them.
Juniors are Chelsea Moser, Nina Umfrid and Savannah Taylor. Sophomores are Brook Wilson and Kaydi Milton.
Zimbrick describes the freshmen as a “huge group” and “very athletic.” Most are expected to make the JV1 team, with a few competing for top spots.
With Valley Catholic moving to the Lewis and Clark League and Horizon Christian adding volleyball but only at the JV level, the coach sees only one big rival, the Spartans.
“I see us competing for that top spot,” she said. “It will come down to Sheridan and us.”
Brett Woolley will coach JV1. Zimbrick and Woolley will share JV2 duties.
