Willamina Council to consider revisions

The Willamina City Council will meet on Jan. 26 to discuss the draft amendments to Section 31 governing the planning commission and the attorney response to a letter from J. W. Millegan dated Nov. 9 regarding the planning commission review of the coffee shop located inside Crossroads Worship Center.

One member of the planning commission has already resigned as the result of the adoption of the code of conduct by the council in December. Another has informed The Sun of plans to resign. Still other commissioners have voiced concern about the restrictions the revisions to Section 31 would place on the commission and are contemplating stepping down if the council adopts the proposed amendments.

If the changes to Section 31 are approved, all appointees to the commission would be required to live within the city limits. The length of terms would be reduced from 4 years to 3 years with and equal number of terms expiring each year. The changes would also regulate when, where and how often the planning commission can meet.

The council will also discuss documentation presented to the council by J.W. Millegan in December. Millegan requested and received an opinion from Edward Sullivan, a highly respected land-use attorney, regarding the city’s requirement that Main Street Brew go through a planning commission review. Sullivan disagreed with the opinion of the city’s attorney on the issue.

The work session will begin 7 p.m. It will be held at City Hall, 411 N.E. C. Street.
