SFD hires new medic

When Trevor Olsen was hired last month to fill a firefighter/paramedic vacancy for Sheridan Fire District, he may have been the newest addition to the staff, but he wasn’t new to Sheridan. Olsen, one of 16 candidates for the full-time position, lived at the Sheridan fire station five years ago as part of the district’s sleeper program for college students.
Olsen joined the SFD sleeper program in 2007, receiving financial assistance with college classes and gaining hands-on experience while living and working at the fire station. He completed his paramedic training and graduated from Oregon Health & Sciences University in 2009.
Prior to returning to Sheridan, Olsen worked for Metro West Ambulance for 16 months. He was one of five candidates for the position invited to complete an assessment center in November.
According to Fire Chief Wade Davis, Olsen demonstrated outstanding professionalism, honesty and confidence during the assessment. “I feel that Trevor will be a tremendous asset to the district for many years to come,” he told the board.
Although Olsen is currently commuting to Sheridan from Portland, he and his wife and their 15-month old daughter hope to relocate to this area soon.
