Storm Update: School canceled in Sheridan Friday
With sections of road around the Sheridan area covered with water and more rain in the forecast, Sheridan schools released students early today and canceled classes on Friday.
Willamina students were in class all day on Thursday and, as of 3:30 p.m., were scheduled for a full-day on Friday. All buses are running on all routes.
Five Willamina students did get out of class a little early. When the school district learned of the landslide on Rock Creek Road between Buck Hollow Road and Three Deer Lane, the parents were contacted and the school district took the students home.
During the early afternoon hours, the West Valley enjoyed a break from the steady downpour. That allowed drainage ditches to drop and water to recede from roads and streets.
At 2 p.m. the South Fork of the Yamhill River registered 13.56 ft. at the recording station west of Willamina. The National Weather Service was forecasting the river to crest shortly after 3 p.m. at 14.38 ft. That’s well below the record level of 17.1 ft.
UPDATE: The South Yamhill crested in Willamina at 13.56 at 13.56 feet at 2 p.m. and at 5 p.m. registered a level of 13.03 feet. The McMinnville gauge registered at 41.41 feet at 5 p.m. on Thursday and has a crest forecast at 54.18 feet at 10 a.m. on Friday. To see the latest readings, click here. More than a dozen volunteers were filling sandbags at the Liberty Homes site in Sheridan this afternoon. In the spirit of helping out, it might be a good time to go clean out those storm drains in your neighborhood before it starts raining again. Remember, the City can only get to so many of them.
