Teen charged in Sheridan stabbing

Salem 17-year-old charged with assault, taken to detention center; Sheridan teen hospitalized by attack

A Salem teen has been arrested and charged with second-degree attempted assault in connection to a stabbing that took place in Sheridan at 11 a.m. on Aug. 13.

The 17-year-old suspect was lodged in the Yamhill County Juvenile Detention Facility. Because he is a minor, the Sheriff’s Office would not release his name.

Yamhill County Sheriff Jack Crabtree said his office learned of the incident when the victim’s father contacted deputies. According to Crabtree the father said his 18-year-old son, Joshua David Wheeler of Northwest Evans Street, received the injury while socializing with another youth. The stabbing occurred at 235 N.W. Lincoln St. in Sheridan.

Wheeler was transported by Sheridan Fire District ambulance to Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville. He was later transferred to a Portland area hospital, the sheriff said.

“This type of injury could have easily been fatal” said Crabtree. The matter has been referred to the Yamhill County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of additional charges which could include Measure 11 offenses.
