Election pool grows
Lucy Hebert joins race for Sheridan mayor with Adamson, Murdock

Longtime resident and Sheridan realtor Lucy Hebert joined the mayoral race at the last minute on Friday, deadline day in Sheridan to file for November’s ballot.
Hebert joins incumbent Mayor Val Adamson and challenger Dennis Murdock, a heavy equipment operator, in a race to lead the city.
Incumbent city councilors Harry Cooley and Tonya Mishler filed last week in hopes of keeping their seats at City Hall. Self-employed contractor Chris Ehry also joined the council race last week, joining earlier filers Rene Quinones, incumbent, and local contractor Ted Schroeder.
The five council candidates will compete for three at-large seats on the Nov. 2 ballot. Ballots are scheduled to be mailed on Friday, Oct. 15.
The story in Willamina is a bit different. Mayor Vernon Mosser was the only candidate to file for that job and only two of the three incumbent councilors filed for re-election. Councilors Randall Long and Laurie Toney—who was still completing the filing process with the Yamhill County Clerk’s office Tuesday afternoon—will run unopposed.
Unless someone wins a write-in campaign, the shoe-in candidates and the rest of the Willamina council will have to appoint another member to the board in November.
Tonya Saunders, the only Willamina councilor not to file for re-election, is currently overseeing the city’s books – a check the council recently added to the system to help eliminate financial problems.
Hebert said she wants to be mayor to help achieve positive growth in Sheridan’s economy and to help reduce debt.
“We have a lot of growth in the residential zone,” she said. “We need to generate and encourage commercial and industrial growth now.”
Ehry’s top priority if elected to office would be to “cut spending in this bad economy. Save for the rainy days to come.”
